I always rely heavily on Amazon buyers reviews of any product. 4 and 5 star products are usually a safe buy.  Also consider that Dell Alienware always has Revisions to their models: R1, R2, R3. Alienware M17x R3 new or refurbished?

When you buy refurbished laptops you have to make sure that you get some warranty. Usually you can add Square trade warranty from reputable vendors. A lot of times the refurbished models have never been touched, because they have been returned to the seller for credit card issues, bad address, or defective hard drive, etc…. On the other hand, prices for new models can be extremely competitive. I personally prefer the Asus G74Sx    in the 17″ gaming laptop arena. I can get the same performance for quite a bit less  money.  Also Dell Support has not been up to speed in the past.  Asus seems to have a lot less trouble with their machines when you read the buyers comments.
